Students Perform Original Music Before Hamilton Crowd

Hamilton, the Broadway sensation, has come to Hartford and the Academy had a chance to take in the show and do a little performing themselves. In front of packed audience, students Justin Williams and Amareon Blackman performed together an original piece .

The opportunity came by in September when The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a non profit that supports K-12 history education, asked for proposals from area schools on history projects centering on U.S. colonial times. Selected schools were awarded tickets to the Bushnell performance with a chance to present their work prior to the show. A proposal was sent in and was approved by the institute and it centered on the idea of using original artistic expression as a means to study various occurrences of Colonial America. The project was overseen by musical theater chair Stacie Beard, and history teacher Ron Cannada. Each student was tasked with identifying an event or person for which they created an original performance piece. They then performed their pieces for a small group of teachers and administrators who judged based on a rubric provided by the Institute. The performances were videotaped and submitted. The top schools were selected to perform prior to Hamilton.

Justin and Amareon studied the Boston Tea Party. For their work, they created an original rap piece, including track and lyrics. Their work was among the few who had the opportunity to perform before the performance of Hamilton.
