Keep Hartford Warm

On Saturday, January 20th, Academy students participated in Keep Hartford Warm, an initiative organized by Academy English teacher Greg Garcia. Senior Nikki Ponticelli, junior Megan Torres, and sophomore Richanny Rodriguez volunteered to distribute clothing to the homeless and sheltered in Downtown Hartford's Burr Mall, located between the Wadsworth Athenaeum and City Hall. Senior Nina Cabrera couldn't attend, but baked cookies and other treats for those who gathered to enjoy.

The event was enriching and edifying for everyone, as students chatted with the many folks who came for gloves, hats, coats, socks, and other donated items like hand warmers.

Over the previous two weeks, a small army of Academy students participated in two massive sorting sessions, where donated items were categorized and bagged for easy distribution.

Keep Hartford WarmDue to the overwhelming amount of donations from students, faculty, and the public, Garcia also brought a dozen bags of winter wear to The CREC Foundation's Hurricane Relief Center on Van Dyke Ave., where displaced families and children from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean relocating to the Greater Hartford area can access services and supplies.

Garcia plans to enlist Academy students to repeat the Keep Hartford Warm event in February.
