Student Honored With ScholasticCreative writers and four visual artists are the latest students from CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts to win several Scholastic Awards for visual art and writing.

Scholastic receives submissions nationwide from students grades 7-12 in twenty nine different categories in literary and visual arts. In 2017, over 330,000 works were submitted for consideration. Judges are luminaries in the field who look for works that exemplify originality, technical skill, and personal voice or vision.

This year, GHAA creative writing senior Madison Culpepper, Torrington, made out like a bandit in the Regional Scholastic Writing Awards being honored for five original pieces. Two pieces “Trust Issues” and “Party of One” were recipients of the Silver Key, while “June Morning” and “The River” received Honorable Mention.

Both Silver Key and Honorable Mention Recipients are honored on a local level. Culpepper will also be recognized nationally with her piece “Grief” which was awarded a Gold Key. Recipients of the Gold Key go on to be judged in a separate ceremony at New York’s Carnegie Hall where she could win further recognition including a scholarship.
