Visual artists from the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts have found more opportunities to share their talents in a way that gives back. Students from the Creativity in the Community class have teamed up with Mercy Housing and Shelter in Hartford in providing baby blankets to new mothers in need. Each fleece blanket was created by a student from the class and came with a custom card with a congratulatory message. New mothers who come to Mercy for assistance will receive these blankets.

Nancy Doherty, who teaches the class, is looking forward to a continuing partnership with Mercy. Starting in the fall, she intends on having her students work on creating winter scarves for charity. The project will be based around a lesson on homelessness and mental health using other artists as reference including Dust Bowl photographer Dorothea Lange.
